Fun with English Grammar

During this presentation, participants will review a selection of important grammar topics such as comparatives and superlatives and gerunds and infinitives. These topics will help them communicate more clearly while improving their understanding of the language. Students will engage in several activities in order to practice the new structures and will be able to evaluate their own progress. This session is designed to solve some common problems non-native speakers show when using these more advanced structures.

When Vocabulary and Grammar Meet

Professor David Wilkins at the University of Reading claimed: “Without grammar little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Since grammar and vocabulary go hand-in-hand, it would be very difficult to have a coherent and meaningful communication, either orally or by writing if learners don’t understand both. This webinar will introduce participants to the critical connection between the form, use, and meaning of words, and how this essential connection between vocabulary and grammar impacts communication.

English Skills for Oral Presentations

In this session, participants will learn about important criteria to keep in mind when giving oral presentations. They will be presented with general guidelines for having strong content and organization as well as visual aid tools that can be used to maintain audience attention. The importance of using good signposting phrases as well as techniques to applying appropriate stress and intonation will also be addressed.

English Idioms in Action

Using a language in its natural context can be challenging for second language learners who don’t always understand the figurative language that is so frequently used by native speakers. Participants will examine a selection of very common English idioms, and through fun games, activities, and stories, they will learn the meaning of these useful expressions, which will improve confidence and fluency in communicating thoughts in casual environments.

The Importance of Listening

Today, a fast-moving lifestyle and an incessant flood of information has modified the way we listen. Most of us just listen to reply – not to understand. Using examples and suggestions, this lecture will discuss how English learners can improve their listening skills and be able to understand everyday conversational English.

Academic Writing Lab

This lecture will explore useful techniques for English composition in the academic environment, and will review elements in academic writing, including the thesis statement development, academic essay structure, and the editing process. Participants will leave with a clear foundation of the core components of strong compositions at the college level.

Writing for Social Media

This presentation addresses tone and audience, and how writing for social media provides authentic materials and even leadership opportunities for students. Social media provides a space to write with passion and allows writers to inform as well as providing a venue for future ambitions and connections to real life experiences. In this session, learners will understand how blogging offers many benefits to the development of writing skills, and that in addition to supporting academic and creative writing, it fosters global leadership, cultural awareness, research, analysis, and critical thinking. Learners will review patterns of organization, APA, the editing process, poetry formats, infographics, technical literacy, and how all of these connect to personal branding.
